Sanctuary Lives Again Enemy Do Not

sas titles

Salt and Sanctuary is a game that you learn, non ane that y'all sympathize going in. If you've come from the Souls games, then a lot of it volition be familiar concepts with different names. If you're new to the 'souls-like' genre entirely, and then things may seem a little disruptive, or at the least, there'll be more than to the game than you might realise. At that place'southward an impressive amount of depth hither, and whilst you lot could acquire through painstaking trial and error, you'll be better served if you sympathize what you're dealing with, when you bargain with it. Here'southward a list of all the things I've learned from my time with Salt and Sanctuary.

sas dead

When you dice, it's not the end of the earth

One of the key staples of the 'souls-like' genre is that upon death, whatsoever experience points used to upgrade your grapheme  – referred to as 'common salt' in this game – will remain at the indicate where yous died, until yous can retrieve it. If yous die before retrieving information technology, information technology will be lost forever. The same is true here, though with slight modifications to the traditional formula. If you lot are killed past an enemy, they will 'pick upwards' your table salt, and y'all'll have to kill them to regain information technology. It'southward easy to tell which enemy has your salt, as they will proceeds a smoky white aura.

sas smoky aura

If you die to autumn damage, your salt will take the class of a bat, which you'll need to kill to regain your common salt. This bat does accept the ability to poison you lot, but has relatively low health and is not a threat.

sas bat

Pro tip: You may find yourself in a state of affairs where yous'll be facing this salt bat, besides as regular enemies. It may seem similar a good idea to target the bat and regain your common salt, but it's almost always the case that normal the enemies are a greater threat. If you focus on the bat, you'll likely dice to the enemies and exist stuck in the same state of affairs of having to become and retrieve your common salt. Impale the enemies first, as the bat isn't going anywhere.

If y'all die to a boss, you'll have to remove a certain corporeality of their health before your salt is returned to y'all, rather than having to kill them. This is marked by an arrow on their health bar, and if you get their health lower than the marked position, you lot get your salt back. A dominate that has your salt will too accept that same smoky aura equally a regular enemy, until y'all meet the damage requirement, where there'll lose it and be staggered for a moment.

The one affair you will permanently lose is Aureate, at 10 percent of your total funds per death. This is more of an annoyance than an actual issue, as anything worth buying is always cheap enough to purchase. This means that if you're dying a lot, y'all're better off spending your coin rather than saving it, equally you'd end up not having it later anyway.

SaS level up and creed

Use your salt to level up
Provided you manage to avert losing all of your salt to death, y'all tin can level up using it. At any Sanctuary, you can kneel by the altar in the eye and choose 'Level up'. This will non increase your stats direct, rather, it will give y'all an detail called a 'black pearl'. Then, at the same altar, choose 'Tree of Skill'. This will open up the game's skill tree, where you can spend your black pearls in commutation for nodes on the tree.

SaS skill tree

These nodes will give you either a stat increase, an extra potion, or permit you lot to wield stronger weapons. The college the 'grade' of the weapon, the more black pearls needed to learn the node. Handily, each weapon node as well gives you lot a stat increase of the aforementioned amount. For example, if you purchase 'Class 3 Swordfighter', it'll cost 3 black pearls, but yous'll go 3 points of Forcefulness, as well as being able to use class 3 swords.

Each time y'all level upwards, the salt required to level upwardly further will get higher. Y'all can find out how much you'll need in the futurity past choosing 'Level up' again. Information technology'll tell you 'Need more salt to ascend!' with the required number being displayed in red.

sas need more salt

Pro tip: At that place'due south an easier way to keep runway of whether yous have enough common salt though, built in to the UI. At all times, the bottom-right corner displays how many torches you take, how much golden yous have, and how much salt yous have. Directly beneath the salt counter is a metre that fills in correlation with the amount y'all need to level up. When full, information technology turns from grey to white, letting you know that if you observe a Sanctuary you'll be able to spend your salt and level upwards.

Sanctuaries and Creeds

Then a Sanctuary is where y'all level up, only these safe-havens have a myriad of other uses. Likewise every bit refilling your healing potions and restoring you to full wellness, each Sanctuary tin be used equally a base of operations of operations.

Throughout the game yous'll notice items that allow unlike NPCs to motion into a chosen  Sanctuary. These items are;

  • Stone Merchant
  • Stone Cleric
  • Rock Blacksmith
  • Stone Leader
  • Stone Sellsword
  • Stone Mage
  • Stone Alchemist
  • Rock Guide

Each can be 'offered' at a Sanctuary, which volition let an NPC of whichever vocation to set shop in that Sanctuary. Perhaps the nigh useful of these is the Guide, every bit it allows you to fast travel to whatsoever other Sanctuary, whether there'southward a Guide at the receiving Sanctuary or not.

Pro tip: In that location's an item chosen a 'calling horn' that will allow you fast travel from anywhere to whatsoever Sanctuary with a Guide. As a Guide lets you fast travel to any Sanctuary, you tin use the calling horn, go to the Sanctuary with a Guide, so use the guide to go wherever you similar. Even improve, Guides sell calling horns for only 100 gilded each, then you can stock upward whenever you utilize this method to fast travel.

Each NPC has their ain uses. Some of these are obvious, like the Merchant or Blacksmith. These permit you to purchase various consumable items or upgrade your gear, respectively. Others accept a less clear function, such as the Sellsword or the Alchemist. The Sellsword allows y'all to play co-op locally, as the 2nd player takes straight control over the NPC itself. The Alchemist lets you 'transmute' your weapons. This isn't upgrading them like at the Blacksmith, simply rather irresolute one weapon into some other entirely.

sas transmute

Pro tip: When you transmute a weapon, the new 1 will supercede the older one, significant y'all lose the original weapon. Therefore, don't transmute a weapon that you relish using, or one you've upgraded. Any type of weapon tin can be transmuted into a weapon of that same type. And so if you enjoy using a item spear and want a meliorate one, transmute a spear yous aren't using into the new weapon.

Creeds are direct tied with Sanctuaries, and practice at first seem a footling complicated. If y'all've played Dark Souls, they're very like to covenants. At the get-go of the game, y'all'll become role of a creed. Each Sanctuary belongs to a creed, and each new 1 you discover will become whatever creed you lot're part of. If you aren't the aforementioned creed as the Sanctuary, y'all won't be able to offering stone items to summon NPCs to that Sanctuary. Y'all can still use the NPCs there already though, and then if you lot change creeds halfway through the game, it won't be an issue.

The main purpose of a creed, is that when y'all 'increase devotion' to information technology, you'll permanently (or, for as long equally you're a member of that creed) get items every fourth dimension you visit a Sanctuary, or be able to purchase unlike things from the NPCs there. Yous increment devotion by talking to a Leader (summonable by offering a Stone Leader to an altar) and giving them items. These items are the remains of certain enemies, and will drop at random. For example, you might need 'three Dissever Swordsman Ears'. You lot'll demand to find that item enemy, and kill it until information technology drops what yous need. Luckily, Salt and Sanctuary has a bestiary in the menu that catalogs everything you've killed, and annihilation you managed to loot from their bodies. When you lot hand these items over to the Leader, you'll become to cull which item y'all desire to receive when you balance at the Sanctuary. This will ever include a health potion equivalent and stamina potion equivalent (each creed has a unlike name for these items, but they always perform the aforementioned task). Yous can also get creed-specific items though. For example, the Business firm of Splendor creed will let y'all choose Goldenwine, which temporarily increases your assail, defence, and amount of Gilt found.

sas diamond cluster

Pro tip : Any merchants within The Business firm of Splendor creed, when devotion is increased, will sell 'Diamond Clusters'. They're a rare item that you demand to transmute powerful tardily-game weapons. However, the merchants sell them for zero gilt, and so yous can 'purchase' 99 of them for free, and never have to worry about running out of this normally-scarce fabric.

Change your equipment based on what you're fighting

Salt and Sanctuary has a useful mechanic where yous can have 2 different weapon fix ups equipped, and then just press L1 to change them on the fly. You tin equip to both easily, so y'all can accept a sword in one, and a shield in the other. Then, you can press L1 and all of a sudden have a greataxe in 1 and a wand in the other. This means you can set upwardly a 'melee' stance and a 'ranged' opinion, so you can handle any enemy that comes your manner. For example, I take a 2-handed poleaxe in ane variation, and a poison dagger/ wand combo in the other. The wand gives me range with magic attacks, the toxicant dagger allows me quick, active strikes, and the poleaxe lets me kill anything in between.

sas charm

Throughout the game you will observe 'charms'. You lot tin can equip these to weapons, to give them diverse buffs. Some increment base attack power of that weapon, others allow the weapon to deal elemental harm, and some accept very situational abilities that may be useful against particular bosses. This adds to your arsenal versatility massively, as you can have weapons that deal different types of damage all together, and then swap to whichever is appropriate.

Your armour is important too. Each piece of armour has different stats for defending confronting different types of damage. Merely tap square on the inventory screen, and all the numbers will pop up. If you're fighting something that looks like information technology's spewing electricity everywhere, you're going to want whatsoever has the highest Lightning Def. number, and then on.

Keep rollin' rollin' rollin'

As in Souls, the rolling animation has invincibility frames, or 'iframes'. This ways that if y'all're hit by an attack at the right moment of a curlicue, you won't accept any damage, and the set on will laissez passer through you as if you were never there. The corporeality of iframes you get is based on your full equipment load. Every weapon and piece of armour has weight, and if you become over certain thresholds, your motility speed is lowered.

  • At less than 25% equip load, you become the fastest roll
  • At 25%, you become a relatively quick roll, which still has many iframes
  • At 50%, you lot get a notably slower roll, but information technology's still perfectly viable
  • At 75%, you 'fatty roll', which is very dull with very few iframes
  • At 100%, you lot cannot curl at all

All other movement (leap height, running speed, climbing speed, and stamina regeneration rate) is based on the exact pct of your equip load, rather than at certain markers. For example, you will be a tiny bit faster at 31% equip load than at 32%, and and so on.

Pro tip: The climbing animation is completely made up of iframes, so yous're entirely invulnerable during it. This tin exist extremely useful, if you call up to employ it to your reward. In 'The Tree of Men' dominate fight for case, there are several platforms. Near the end of the fight, the dominate will start exhaling burn down in an anticlockwise rotation effectually the room, which can practise a lot of damage and is near impossible to dodge. If you fourth dimension it so that you're climbing when it hits you though, you'll have no damage at all. If y'all're in the style of danger, ledges can be a keen asset.

Scarlet Candles = Boss fight

sas no candles

If you ever run into a candelabra with a number of glowing red candles on information technology, that means there'due south a boss non far beyond. The number of glowing candles can change, and sometimes none will be lit at all (like the prototype above). In fact the number of lit candles is actually a meta element to the game, and refers to the number of players online who've died to it recently. None lit = fewer deaths. Conversely, if you come across a full candelabra on fire, you know that people are struggling with that boss. Don't permit this worry you though; I've beaten multiple fully-lit bosses on my offset try, and notwithstanding died over and over to those with none lit.

Don't give up

Y'all'll find that even from very early on, there's multiple areas to explore at once. If yous're bashing your head confronting a wall (or a item dominate you don't like) get ahead and leave, and explore wherever else. You lot'll be able to gain a few levels at the least, and may well find items that aid y'all in your previously-problematic situation, or even a way around. The whole world is littered with helpful items and secrets. It'south also important to keep an centre on your gear, as a lot of the time yous'll accept something to upgrade.

sas vanquished

If a boss is giving you besides much problem, just have a await at it'due south wiki page and cheque out the various elemental weaknesses. Fifty-fifty if you're trying to shell the game as 'purely' as possible, nix in-game will ever tell yous this data except for trial and error, so having a glance at the best way to take it downward is a good style to go over troublesome roadblocks. You can just modify your gear appropriately for the encounter, then bandy dorsum subsequently. By the mid to late-game portions, you'll have a pretty various assortment of armour to bargain with whatever they're throwing at yous. Depending on how you've congenital your grapheme, yous may well discover you tin change to anything to exist able to get over the obstacle you're facing. For example, most of my damage comes in the course of 'slash damage' (as opposed to 'strike damage'- the only other type of non-elemental impairment in the game). I can apply whichever elemental type I want, and so normally I can have downward annihilation. Until I came to a late-game boss that has the highest slash defense – and everyman strike defence – of annihilation I've seen in the game to that indicate. The trouble was, I had no way of inflicting strike damage, and so I had to stick with only taking tiny slivers of it'due south wellness per (marginally risky) hit. However, the boss could exist poisoned, so after a few minutes of careful dodging and slicing abroad with my trusty poison dagger, it finally ended upward 'vanquished'. That'due south part of the brilliance of games similar this – even if you're not well equipped and massively underleveled, you can technically beat anything. Alternatively, if yous match the criteria you tin destroy and obliterate.
